How much transmission fluid do I need in a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500?

It is a 5.9L V8 engine and the transmission fluid is really low.

  1. That depends on whether its a 2wd or 4x4, and then you need the engine size and the type of transmission. Auto or manual? If auto and 4x4 is it a 46RE or a 42RE or or or...

    BEst bet is to call a dodge dealers parts room, give them your V.I.N. and ask them the type of trans, and do they have the capacity? If not, call NAPA. They can get you the capacity once you get them the info they need. And use the right fluid ATF+4 or you can damage your transmission.  


  2. look in the owners manual it gives you the exact amount that it takes to fill it from empty ,its in the maintenance section of it,its usually around 5 quarts in the transmission i think,if your changing it have at least 6 quarts on hand though,what i always do is add 4 quarts then start it and let it circulate then finish filling it,good luck.
