How much trouble can I get in for driving a car with the wrong plates and no insurance?

I just bought a car in London, ON. I myself live in Toronto. I just wanted to know what are the fines/ penalties of driving a car with the wrong plates on it and without insurance. This is because I was thinking that I would take the plates off of my parents car and put them on there just for the drive home, so that I could register the car once I get back in town, get plates insurance and all.

  1. You can use temp plate to move newly bought vehicle providing that the plate owner is present with proper insurance with bill of sale.

  2. So tell me this.... What happens if you sneeze while driving the car... and close your eyes for a brief second.. and rearend a minivan?

What if that minivan has 5k worth of damage... and 5 people who get attorneys for "injuries".   What if this attorney demands 10k per person for their "alleged" injury?

Are you telling me you have 55 thousand dollars laying around?

Ive seen it happen WAY too many times.  People are naive and say "ill just have it uninsured for a week" and then something like this happens and their life is practically ruined.

Use your noggin. What on earth are you thinking putting peoples lives in danger?

  3. I suggest you not even try it.

It's only 4 hours? That doesn't make any difference. A car that is not legally registered and is not insured has no business being on the road in the first place.

If you simply must get the car back to where you live, your best (and safest) option is to have it towed or tow it yourself. I don't know traffic laws in Canada but the offenses aren't much different. Here in the US, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle can cost you your license, your car and maybe your freedom (meaning probation but jail time is not unheard of). You will also face heavy fines and penalties.

It is really worth all that?

The first poster, who you told to "STFU", is exactly right. Also, you asked for opinions...it's just too bad if you don't like or don't agree with them.

  4. The first answerer has told you how much trouble you can get in.

Plus which with your parents plates on the car, with their permission, that opens up their pockets to a lawsuit.

If that alone isn't enough to deter you, then just do it.

  5. Easy way out instead of taking a chance....go to the DMV and get a temporary plate.  If you already have insurance, add it to your policy by phone, if not, I really wouldn't take the chance.  Your putting yourself in jeopardy...
