How much trouble have you gotten into for DUI?

I got a DUI citation in Pennsylvania and it is my first offense. I am going to court next month. I am nervous about what might happen. Can anyone tell me what has happened to them or someone they know regarding the consequences of a DUI? There was no traffic accident, no other vehicles involved.

  1. I have never received a DUI, but I do know people that have. It is a very serious matter. Depending on the judge you get, and other items on your record, you may get lucky and have it reduced to reckless driving, or you may have to pay a very heavy fine. I really doubt that you would be looking at jail time for a first time offense.

Get yourself a lawyer to help you out. And, please, please, please learn from this, and don't do it again. Next time, you could have an accident, and may even kill someone.

  2. It's a SERIOUS ticket. It will haunt you for the rest of your life in one way or another. Mine cost me thousands and thousands of dollars in fines and increased insurance premiums. Luckily I got mine at a time they still were taken off your record after a certain number of years. We just had a teacher who applied in our district. They hired him, but when his DUI showed up on his background check, they gave the job the the next applicant. I felt terrible hearing that because I know the same would have happened to me if mine was still there.

I would get a lawyer and do everything I could to get the charges reduced. I am not trying to scare you. I am just trying to tell you how serious this is.

    Good luck.

  3. Serious. You need to contact a lawyer asap if you haven't already. 1st offense is eligible for the ARD program which isn't too awful...30 days loss of license, some probation and community service, some hefty fines. Don't let this go to court. Depending on your BAC, technically you could spend a weekend in county lockup and lose your license for up to a year. Just don't put it off, and don't get a second one.
