Question:

How much vacuum can a Erlenmeyer flask, 500 ml, Pyrex withstand?

i know know nothing about chemistry or Erlenmeyer flasks.

i have a vacuum pump, i need to suck brake fluid out of a car, without it going into the pump.

i would like to do it as cheap as possible, but not so cheap the flask implodes, im pretty sure Pyrex hurts. i know brake fluid does.

im thinking of getting this,

with this stopper,

http://www.hometrainingtools.com/products/2915-rubber-stopper-8-2-hole

one hole comes from the car, the other goes to the pump. brake fluid goes in jar, not in pump.

i know it can be done, because i know it has been done, with smaller pumps.

the question is, how much vacuum can this flask handle? the pump is set for 28 lbs, because the tank i have it on can handle at least that much, but the hose is too big for the car. so i can set the pump lower, if you think I will kill myself.

or is this a very bad idea and i should use something else?

or does nobody know the answer because you dont pull vacuums in chemistry?

  1. I have done several experiments with my vacuum pump. The best material I have found is PVC pipe. Just get a piece about 1.5' X 1", an end cap, and purchase the stopper your looking to buy. The pyrex would probably hold a strong enough vacuum to remove the fluid, but I know the PVC will.

  2. There is a version called a vacuum flash which has a sidearm and especially thick glass.  Per my experience a regular 500 flask will probably take it but like you say failure is not a good thing here.  You could cover he flask with packing tape and put in a secondary container or like you say just use less vacuum..
