How much walking as exercise can I do in early pregnancy?

Im only 6 weeks pregnant but feel I have put on a little extra weight mainly due to the fact that my kids have been home on school hols for 2 months and I havent been able to go for my daily walk. Plus I dont have any sickness and instead have a massive appetite. I am slim but not skinny. Remember I am a woman and I dont feel it necessary to have to body of a 14 year old girl!!! About 140lbs! =0)

So my plan is as soon as my boys are back to school next week, off I go on my walks and cut out the silly eating....stick to the healthy foods like.

Will I be able to do my regular 2 mile walks or am I being over ambitious? I remember getting awful "stitches" on my last 2 pregnancies when I walked and Im terrified of being stranded somewhere in pain...lol!! Imagine the embarrassment!

All I want is a regular exercise routine that will keep me energised and stop me from turning into a beached whale. Like I said, I love walking. Any suggestions?

  1. You definitely want to consult your doctor before engaging in any exercise routine while pregnant, but generally speaking, as long as you were doing it before pregnancy, you should be okay.  Most of the time, activity (within reason) is encouraged during pregnancy.  Walking is a great exercise and will probably also contribute to good sleep and mood (as it aids in production of seratonin)!  So, again, check with your doctor (if you've already seen one, you should be able to just call and ask), but plan on getting your walk on!

  2. dont try to lose the weight by exercising a lot or dieting. walking should be fine especially since you've done it b4 pregnancy. you may need to turn it down a notch and be a tad bit more careful, but i think you'll be okay. i ran, swam, did weight training throughout and im okay. if you're worried about the weight, its better just to watch what you're eating and not overeat rather than exercise a bunch during pregnancy. cuz, you know, it gets harder on your body later on down the road.

  3. I used to walk about 4 miles every day until I was about 7 months.

It made me feel great! It's gentle exercise that you're used to so I think it's a brilliant idea.

    Happy Pregnancy!
