  1. In 2005, Oregonians purchased about 200 million bottles of water; of which, an estimated 125 million were thrown in the trash.  That is a staggering number (62.5%) and bottled water consumption has increased significantly since 2005.

    This revelation prompted the Oregon Legislature to add water bottles to the existing "Bottle Bill" which required a 5-cent deposit on all glass, plastic and aluminum container used for beer, soda, malt beverages, and carbonated mineral water.  Enacted in 1972, the "Bottle Bill" greatly increased recycling rates in Oregon.

  3. According to information that is now nearly 10 years old, there are something like 1 billion pounds of plastic bottles in landfills.  Of course, some or most of these bottles are not water bottles, but I'm sure they are major contributors.

  4. Noone could answer your question accurately at how many water bottles are out in the landfills.  Iff you are worried about the landfills. You may want to recycle the water bottles or anything that's recycleable so they don't end up in the dump! If you have items that you don't have need of and want to get rid off.
