  1. keep it shallow, at least 4-6 inches.

make sure to put in a lot of plants. they love to burrow and hide in the plants. a half buried planting pot works very well for a little 'cave'

good luck with your little turtle :)

rena filsters work well with sand, i use one myself. however since you won't have that much water in your tank you won't need an xp3, an xp1 should suffice.

use sand. sand is a lot closer to their natural substrate then river rocks.

  2. Shallow water is a good, but actually the fact is it does not matter how deep the water is as long as the turtle has a place to securely rest and get to his food.

  3. Yeah around 6 inches, is good since it is a shallow water turtle. You can also add in sand, since they do like to burrow and are more comfortable in substrate.Make sure you have a basking place where you have a both a uva and uvb bulb, so 2 separate lights! The water should be warm, so get a water heater that sets it to a good temperature like between 75-80F. It is also extremely important that you have a great filtration system, in my opinion Rena Filstar xp3 is the best, but it might kick up the sand, so you could use other substrate( bigger than the turtle's head so he cant swallow it of course!)

  4. About 6 inches of water should be fine.  They need shallower water than other species.
