Question:

How much water leaks through your swimming cap to your hair when you go swimming?

I am of the impression that some water always gets in, was just wanting to enquire what the average amount is?

I find that wearing swimming caps really cuts out the circulation and gives me a headache, and yet most of my hair gets wet. I am not a competitive swimmer, so am not interested in preventing water drag, just protecting my hair.

I have done some research on a good hair care regime for swimmers, so will take care of my hair anyway.

Do I really need to bother wearing a cap?

  1. Being a competitive swimmer for many years, I can't swim without my cap now!  However, to keep my hair in good shape, I used to run through conditioner prior to putting my cap on.  Today a leave in conditioner would suffice.  Then when you get out just jump in the shower for a minute and your hair stays great. Just be aware to not put conditioner around your forehead or back of head, otherwise the cap can slip off.  Did this for many years and never had a problem.

  2. Yes ditch the cap. Take a plunge and enjoy the freedom.

  3. I was on the swim team in high school and found the caps to be annoying and useless. The chlorinated water still gets in, only with the cap on it just sits there against your hair!

Plus I found that I cut through the water better without it. Didn't feel natural with it on.

In my opinion, ditch it! :-)

  4. it sounds like your either not sealing the cap right, or you are buying a cheap one.  whenever i am forced to use a swim cap the only water that gets in is those little hairs on the back of my neck that just wont go in.

for wearing the cap, it all depends on if your on a team or not, if you can tie your hair back you should have no issues, but if you are required to wear the cap for your team, you might ask your coach for some advice.

you might try swimming in a saltwater pool, cause that is fine on the hair, and it is good for your skin too!

  5. im on a swim team.. and yes your hair still gets wet a little. just make sure you pull it down past your hairline. and if it makes you loose circulation I'd ditch the cap and make sure you use clarifying shampoo and conditioner.
