Question:

How much weight can an asphalt driveway hold?

My driveway is average - 2-3 inches of asphalt, with a 8-10inch stone base. I'd like to know what size (weight) truck I can park on it without risk of denting the asphalt.

Thanks!

  1. Don't park anything larger than a pick-up truck. Any asphalt drive will indent with weight and heat.

  2. well on a hot day maybe a big truck.. a dump truck could do it though.

  3. Asphalt is a very soft material, so its all about whats under it.

You said you had 8-10 inches of stone base, I assume you mean crushed stone (so its like gravel)?

Even with this, it would depend on how packed it is.

Its really depends not only on what you have stated here, but also how it was installed.

If it was packed correctly, with an 8 inch base, it should be able to handle a decent size truck, like a heavy pickup or so, but I wouldn't park too much heavier on there.

One other consideration is drainage, if it wasn't done correctly (like a lot of water running by from a large yard) it could be running under the driveway and shifting and loosening the packed stone.
