  1. weight training is not good for boxing. It tightens your muscles and makes you less flexible. Do lots of push ups,sit ups, crunches, pull ups, dips and run.

  2. Franco Columbu and I trained hard with barbells, and we were both good boxers. We competed in physique and power lifting contests too. It is a myth about too much barbell work making one slow and stiff. John Grimek refuted that silly tale in the 1930's, but some people still believe it. If one knows how to train properly, it helps with any athletics. I massage and stretch along with the barbell work. It is just morons who do not know how to train who have problems. If you are beginning, take it slow and easy, but build up. Progressive weight training is good for any athletic endeavors. Check the barbell magazine at newsstands: "IronMan", "MuscleMag", "Flex", "Muscle & Fitness" and "Muscular Development". It is fine with me if all of my opponents believe silly myths and do not develop their bodies to their full potentials.

  3. If you want to be in a heavier weight class, lift weights. if you want to stay in your natural weight class, don't. Being strong does not make you hit harder. Weighing more makes you hit harder. Benching alot makes you gain weight.

  4. Man, all of these village idiots saying weights are no good for boxing, and I'll bet not one of these "know alls" have ever stepped into the ring.

FACT: Super set weight training is essential to any pro boxer. Goggle search Ricky Hattons training as he has a real good program split over two sessions. You should only do weights a couple of times per week, never over an hour per session.

Run at least 4 mile per day 6 days per week.

The rest will be made up from your boxing club with bag and pad work then eventally sparring.

Make sure you get a good trainer otherwise all of that good training is being wasted.

Good luck mate, there is nothing like boxing.

P.S. don't listen to any idiots that have plenty to say and have never stepped it the ring, the guys that have will have you answers.

                              --good   luck,. bye,.,

  6. Yeah, boxers don't really need to weight train that much because they're not body builders and they're not trying to get all that bulky. Body weight exercises are the ones most recommended which are listed in the above answer. Anyways just to repeat they are pushups, sit ups, crunches, pull ups, dips, planks, and all the other body weight exercises you can think of. If you do decide to weight train for boxing however, it is recommended that you keep the weight you are lifting at minimum meaning light-moderate but make your repetitions high. Try for 15 reps and up doing light weights. Good luck.

  7. weights and boxing is a debate thats been going on for years now ,and for many years considered a no go as when you become heaviley muscled you become stiffer. but you can become very muscley and be extremley flexable, but this does lead to even more training but of the stretching kind.(used in matial arts) i'm only 5'11, 13and half stone which makes me very heaviley muscled and i'm as flexable as a peice of string.and i do boxing, kickboxing and kung fu and use weights myself and have been a successful pro at boxing and kickboxing. and i'm now a qualified kickboxing instructor so boxing and weights do go together, but it shouldn't be a big part of your training( and you don't want to end up looking like some meat ball)

  8. the guy above me pretty much hit the nail on the head. If you do any weight training make sure you stretch afterwords

  9. well i was goin to go on a long thing about weights bein good for boxing but just listen too miyuki & kyojin and Pro-tour they got it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
