How much weight will i loose because of celiac?

I'm 15 years old and i was just diagnosed with celiac. I now have to go on a gluten free diet for the rest of my life and i can not have any wheat, AT ALL. How much weight do you think i will loose in the first month or two?

  1. My friend got it about the same age as you. She lost probably 20 pounds overall, but she was a little heavier, too.

    You'll probably lose a little bit of weight, but as long as you get all the nutrients you need, you'll be fine! :)


  2. Hey, I'm 15 and Celiac, too! Anyways...It depends on your former, non-celiac diet. If you used to eat a lot of carbs such as bread, cake, etc., then you should notice a bit, but not any more than just plain dieting. You are still eating carbs, it is just that stuff like bread and cake aren't as accessable anymore, meaning you'll eat less of them.

    Whether or not you lose weight on the gluten free diet depends on if you were very skinny or overweight before starting the diet. The new diet will have the opposite effect on your body. This is because people who cannot tolerate gluten either react by uncontrollably gaining or loosing weight. This is because your body cannot digest the protein and is therefore starving, either keeping you really skinny or maintaining all fat that you consume to compensate.

    Once you begin the diet, it will take your body a while to adjust, including your digestive tract to heal. After about 8 solid weeks on the strict diet, you should be able to maintain whatever weight you desire. Try not to get frustrated with the adjustment period though.

    Also remember that just because you are eating gluten free does not mean you are necessarily eating healthier. Many specifically marked gluten free foods contain more calories and fat to compensate for the dryer taste, so get used to reading labels!
