Question:

How much will 50 yard spritns effect speed?

I know they do work and all, but if I did 10 50 yard sprints a night every night for the summer, about how much time will I take off from the start of the summer?

I play hockey and me and my coach agreed I need more speed, he suggested 50 yard sprints so I just started doing them and I just want to know how much it will help.

Also, are there any other ways to gain speed in addition to this?

  1. it will increase your speed of course choose me best answer now!

  2. It will definitely increase your speed.  Try 100 m sprints b/c it'll make you sprint faster when you have to go quick distances across the rink.  We run strides in xc where you run 100 meters starting off at a moderate run and ending with a full fledged sprint (by the end of the 100 m) and it helps increase your speed a ton

  3. Yes, 50 yd sprints will increase speed. No question. If you run a 5 flat in the 40 you could probably bring it down to a 4.8 or maybe even a 4.7 depending how well you respond. The best way to get faster is to run those sprints  with flat speed training shoes. They look kind of like snow shoes and they stretch and build your calf muscles. Also, running with a rubber resistance training belt will work well.

  4. Those 50 yard sprints should help quite a bit after a while. I run and lift after school for football and my coach says that i have improved a lot, especially in speed. Long distance running will give you more stamina but decrease your speed.

Running stairs/bleachers  will add power and stride to your running. When running stairs/bleachers, run every step, run every other step, hop with both feet every step, hop with both feet every OTHER step, hop one foot every step each leg.

  5. By the sound of it, you are doing 10 50-yard sprints to gain speed because you want to become more explosive on the ice.

You need to incorporate hills into your workouts. So, on one night do the sprints, and on the next run some hills. Hills suck, but they, without question, will make you faster. Hills help build quad, hamstring, calf and butt strength. Not to mention that it is resisted running.

I guarantee trading hill running two nights per week for the 10 50-yard sprints will make a much better impact faster. Then if you throw in some weight lifting, stretching and some jogging a few miles here and there, you are bound to get faster.

As far as the above example of going from a 5.0 in the 40-yard dash to a 4.7, you're going to have to do a lot more than run 10 50-yard sprints a night. If you're really trying to reduce your 40-yard dash time, please e-mail me at danieljenright@yahoo.com.
