Question:

How much will I save by taking showers earlier in the evening?

Just as an exercise... Let's say I decide to shower at 7pm everyday instead of 9pm as I do now. The goal is trying to save electricity by not needing the light on for the 15-20min. If electricity costs 10cents per kwh and the light bulb uses 15watts (it's a CFL) , will I really save that much money a year?

  1. I don't know much about electricity, but I'll try and use the units of the values you gave out to set up a calculation that seems reasonable to me. lets say the average shower is 17.5minutes (avg of 15, 20). that is .2916667 hrs. 15watts x .2916667hrs = 4.375 watt-hrs = .004375 kwh.

    .004375kwh * 10 cents per kwh = .04375 cents per shower.

    assume 365 showers in one year: 375 x .04375 = 15.97 cents ~ 16 cents.

You'll save almost sixteen cents in a year. Might not be worth a change in your routine.

  2. You must really be tight with a dollar to ask such a ridiculous question. But as the first answer said....WOW!!!!! You could save a whopping 16 cents per year!!!! Go for it tight wad!!!!!

  3. If you really want to save money take shorter showers in the Morning -  use natural light instead of electricity -

save you pennies - they are still worth someting and they do add up --- just think if everyone in the USA did this  how much it would save .

I prefer long showers - i work hard for them and deserve a decent long HOT shower.
