  1. It is hard to say, because prices differ WIDELY on were you live. Like hooves in my area are $30 for a trim...but in other areas it is $90. Pipe corrals depend on the maker. Umm...I would suggest find a knowlegable horse person in your area. Or (if you already don't) take some lessons to learn more about care, and meet people who know the prices in your area. :)

It also depends on the horse. I know one horse (who is also a VERY nice QH) that can live 100% on grass AND STAY FAT!!! It is insane...he was called Blubber Nugget for a good reason at the farm xD but then again there is a TB at the SAME farm eating the same grass who had to be fed three times a day (3 quarts in each meal to be exact) just so the SPCA wouldn't come and arrest his owners :P ^^ So, you need to do more research for YOUR AREA

    Hope I Helped :)

  2. You didn't tell us what type(s) of horses.

A pony's going to be a cheaper keep than say a Quarter Horse, but then depending upon the Quarter Horse, it's going to be a cheaper keep than a Thoroughbred.

The average Quarter Horse is going to take roughly 2 bales (100 LB plus a bale) of alfafa hay a week.  roughly $38.00/wk.

Then, there's grain.  Same horse about 90 LBS of grain (3LB coffee can each day.) at about $40.00/mo.

Shoer:  Trims are $35.00 ever 6-8 weeks, shoes $80.00/same time frame.

Buying a pipe stall:  $800.00-$1,000.00 depending upon what you want, shelters are more.

Just for feed and upkeep, $2730.00/yr.  Add the pipestall to it.

Of course you didn't add vet bills, trailering and tack expenses.

  3. I went through some of the links that the previous person sent to you.  Other people's answers were completely asinine!   First off, if you are lucky enough to have a healthy horse that doesn't need to see a vet then it is not that expensive...relatively speaking.  We spend approximately $150 per month for our horse (that we keep on our property).  The figure includes hay, grain, farrier (every 6-8 weeks), medications.  Obviously that cost will go up if they get injured or sick.  At that point..it could be as little as $100 and as much as several thousand.

One other good thing to point out is horses are herd animals. They do not like to be alone.  Getting 2 horses is something you might want to consider.

  4. This question is asked a lot. And the answers vary depending on location, horse size, etc. A simple answer is a lot of money. I'll post some other answers on here from different people who have asked the same question.

  5. I spend between $2500-$3000 per year (total) for two horses and two ponies at home.  I give my own vaccinations, pay the vet for coggins and rabies shots, and usually have one extra vet call per year or less.  I don't buy much equipment, since I've been at this for a long time, I don't need a whole lot.  I mostly just get stuff as it needs to be replaced.  Today my gelding destroyed his feed bucket, which he's been using for many years.

If you are asking how much it costs to build a pipe corral, I don't know.  My numbers are for already having a barn and fence in place, and just the amount to care for the horses.
