How much will it cost me to get my bird sexed at the vet?

I just want a sexing done since it's a lovebird and there's no visual differences between the male and female. I know I can save my money and try to tell after a year, but I can't wait that long.

  1. You can order a kit online and do it yourself for only $20 or $25 depending on if you use blood or feathers. It's actually really easy. You order which ever kit (they're free) then you can either clip a nail a little short for a few drops of blood you put on a test card. OR- (this is the way I prefer) you simply pluck a few chest feathers and send them in. In a few days you can have the results by email, with a certificate coming in snail mail a little later. I use http://www.avianbiotech.com and have been happy with them for my testing.

A vet will charge more. Some vets will charge just a little more and the cost of the test, some make you pay an office visit fee, plus the cost of the test, and an extra charge to actually get the sample. The difference will depend on your individual vet, you'd have to call them to find out. It can range anywhere from $30-80 from what I've seen

  2. Sometimes you can find a sexing clinic for birds, they charge $10 for small birds and a bit more for large birds.  Try calling some pet shops and see if they know of any.

  3. Just had my Green Wing Macaw sexed and the bill was $65 for the blood work and all the shipping fees associated with sending the blood to a lab.
