  1. Between the two of you 40,000 dollars a year, which is about 3,333 dollars per month, would be good enough to live on, and have a decent life. But if gas continues to rise so will the prices of everything else such as toys, food, and other many other items which then would mean that your income  should be raised by 10-20 percent to cover the extra utilities.

  2. Some of these things (ie utilities, gas) you will need to look at your bills for the past month(s), because it depends on how much you use.

You'll want an emergency fund set up start out with $1000 and build up from there.

    Things that you are missing

    -phone (cell or lan)

    -internet

    -personal hygiene

    -home supplies (cleaning etc)

    -baby stuff (diapers)

    -medical insurance

You should be fine on $36k a year.  That will be about $2,400 after withholdings.  You'll have to sit down with your boyfriend and come up with a budget and stick to it.
