We worked out the fuel will be about $500 but have no idea about accommodation or anything. Any ideas or advice for this trip would be appreciated

  1. Its a three-day hard drive across the country - "Drive the Nullabor"

I'd go with a $700 fuel estimate, 3,500 kms @ 10kms/litre = 350 litres @ max $2.00. Then of course there is all the getting to/from the Eyre Highway, which soaks up fuel and time.

You don't actually need accommodation, just take a swag and sleep where you stop. Of course, that depends on whether you want to stop and savour the Roadhouses along the way.

Careful preparation is essential. make sure that your vehicle is mechanically sound, carry enough fuel, water, food etc.

Driving across the country can be either a chore or a fun experience depending on what you want to make of it.

  2. Depends which route you take, via Darwin or Sydney. It will cost you closer to $1500 than $500 for fuel, unless you're on a motorbike. Expect to pay at least $1.60 to $1.80. , maybe $2.00 a litre.

Get an accommodation guide from the RACQ, there are plenty of caravan parks from about $30 a day for a cabin.

Food may be a bit dearer in some country areas, the best places to have a main meal are the pubs. Great meals, and very cheap.

The shortest way is down the Newell Hwy to West Wyalong, then across to Mildura on the Mid Western and Sturt Hwy's.

Then stay on the Sturt to Gawler then up to Port Augusta and then to Perth over the Nullabor via the Eyre Hwy.

Thats the quickest, but it depends what you are doing the trip for whether you take in more towns or cities. Plenty of places to stop and rest, even over the Nullabor.

    Enjoy!

  3. Since there's not much in the middle of Australia, you may have trouble finding accommodation. You will have to make sure you carefully plan your trip to make sure you are in a town, such as they are, each night. Book in advance, otherwise you could be stuck. Some towns may not have any accommodation except the local pub. Personally, I'd just fly...

  4. fuell depends on what you are driving...... V8, 4CYL?

as for acomadation why not hire a caravan, that way you can stop when you want, were you want
