The lower end of the MercCruiser was damaged when I hit some rocks in lake Oneida. The propeller is ruined. The bottom fin is broken off. It looks like I need to replace the the entire bottom end.

  1. First thing I tell everyone is, If you hit something underwater, it's covered by your boat insurance.  That's assuming you have it insured.  Beyond that  the prop can be replaced for $200 to $500.  The skeg is say $300.   Now the real question is was the gear case or gears damaged.  From long experience, if you don't have gear damage, and the case is not split you should be ok.  If you "limped" back to the dock, and oil was not running out when you pulled the boat, you "lucked out"!

  2. This is probably a $1,500 (you get lucky) to $3,000 repair or replacement bill if this is a standard Mercrusier Alpha One or Alpha One Gen 2.  If this is a Bravo sterndrive, expect it to cost MUCH much more.

I take it you were operating in an area where you were not familiar with the depth and lake bottom condition (rocky, sand, mud), or did not raise the trim high enough when in the shallows.

Make sure you have the sterndrive completely checked out and repaired by a certified Merc tech.

Check your boat insurance policy and see if it covers accidents such as this.

  3. well I know if you buy a new one they are anywhere from $1200 to $3500 depending on which  series you need, and make sure you get the right ratio..  I'm not sure about repair, if you can even repair them, but to me seems like it would cost somewhat the same if not more due to labor costs.  So if it were me I'd buy a new one. I'm going to once I have some extra $$$

  4. if you say the entire lower lower unit needs replacing then your probably going to shovel out about 2500.00 big ones for a brand new one, not including installation .shop around to get the best deal. if i were you i would put a brand new one on . watch out for rebuilds and used ones. if your mechanically inclined and have some basic shop tools than you could probably do it your self. good luck and watch out for rocks next time.
