Dealer gave me $4600 estimate for transmission. (KBB trade in value is $4500) This is too much for me to pay. Also i have $7000 loan to pay on this car. What is the best way to do?

  1. I don't know if this will help, but I had to replace a transmission on my 1999 Ford Taurus. I got the transmission from a junk yard and had a mechanic put it in for me and it only cost me $1,800 for both the transmission and the labor. I would maybe look around at other junkyard and get more estimates from other mechanics. Also, don't rely on your mechanic to find you a transmission, they will always jack up the price. Find one on your own and then ask the mechanic how much it would cost to put it in for you. Sounds to me like you may be getting ripped off. I would definitely do a little more calling around, that price doesn't sound right to me!

  2. Well, it would certainly cost alot less than $4600.

The only real way to find out is actually go to the junk yard and ask.

  3. Seeing as there are not a lot of 2002 models in junk yards, being only 7 years old, the cost of one may be not that much less than the dealer is quoting.

I talked to a body shop guy last week for my 1996 Explorer (the AAA contract mechanic that changed my flat tire didn't bolt the wheel on properly and it fell off a half mile from my driveway, causing $1000 in mechanical damage and another $900 in body repairs, which AAA is paying for), and he told me that high steel prices is making it more cost-effective for auto recyclers to just crush and recycle their junkers than to part them out.  It's going to be harder and more expensive to keep old cars going until metal prices come down.

  4. A transmission for that from a junk yard will be as high as $1600.  You may find one cheaper but that's the high side.  See if you can find one with less than 75,000 miles on it.  The labor to replace it should be $500 or less.

You can also have a transmission shop rebuild yours for $2200 or less.

Selling it to a dealer will probably cost you more in the long run.  They won't give you the $7000.

  5. To buy a new transmission will most likely cost you approximately $1000 from a junk yard, but to tell you the truth I would have tried to rid of the car first. Sell it to a dealer, and let him buy the new transmission
