I'm moving into an apartment, it is the 2nd and 3rd floor of a house. Probably about 1500/1600 sq. ft. Third floor is well insulated, just redone last year. Furnace is about a year old. Forced air heating. There will be 4 of us living there, most likely showers every day for each of us. We are in Buffalo, NY. The windows are old but we will cover them with plastic in the winter. Side door is sealed nicely around the edges, front door is kind of old, but it leads down the stairs to another door, a front hallway, and yet another door, so I don't see that one being too much of a problem. So, 3 girls, one guy. 2 top floors, therm set at 67ish in the winter. Any estimates? Any other details needed to make an estimate? Thanks!

  1. X-10 a good ballpark number for the cost of heating your apartment will be about $125.00 month in cold weather.  You will use about $30.00 of that amount for heating water.

    Good Luck

  2. I would be very surprised if you get away for $125 a month.  I would think it would be double that.  Your local gas company has a budget plan. You could call them and see what that budget price is and that would tell you what the history of that space costed. You don't have to go with the budget plan but you will know for sure what the last tennant paid.  Then you true cost will reflect on how close you stay to the 67ish.

  3. really depends on what the gas rate you are estimating - impossible to second guess at this time.   Perhaps you can inquire from landlord/gas company/previous tenants - estimates on monthly usage.  Keep in mind what the hot water supply will be as well -- this is where a lot of your money will disappear (unless you have propane on demand system)

  4. I think it is hard to estimate your bill at least for me.  What I do want to say is having your cold air return towards the floor will make a great difference on how warm you feel and therefore how much you use the heat.  Check where yours is and adjust if need be.
