Im transfering out of a community college that had a wonderful campus childcare center. But unfortunately, after working there for over 2 years, I need to take a break this Fall visit and pick another school and transfer to another University in the Spring. But I would really like to work with young kids again. I know that the rate that I was paid is going to be different because of it being state funded. I have a lot of experience working with children in the classroom, but Im just a college student without a degree, and not enough creds. to have the title of an assistant teacher/lead teacher. Help please! :)

  1. Child care is an industry where it's employees are extremely underpaid.  As a lead teacher, I only made between $9 and $10 an hour and that was full-time teaching preschool.  Our aids at both centers I worked at made $6-$7 an hour.  With state funded organizations like Head Start if you don't have a degree the pay is just over $7.    Unfortunately, experience doesn't count for much because they pay by your education/credits/degree.

If you're going to college for education, try contacting local school districts and seeing if they have any positions open as well.  Some states only require 70 credit hours to substitute teach too!

    Good luck!

  2. Unfortunately, the field you picked is grossly underpaid!! You're LUCKY, at least in the state that I live in, if you make $10 an hour! Its really disgusting and unfair seeing how much work these teachers do and how much love they are giving other people's children during the day. Good Luck!!

  3. Childcare workers are robbed. It depends where you live. Usually substitute teachers and part timers make about minimum wage or barely above. I worked in NY on a campus that was also state funded and received 9 bucks an hour for full time after graduating college with a bachelor's.

For my campus it was $7- subs

    8-8.50 assistant teachers without degrees

9 + - group teachers with college degrees

  4. There are so many jobs you can do without having your degree yet. The pay really depends on your experience, collge units, where you live, what job it is. It could be anywhere between minimum wage up to $15 an hour. Teachers usually are lower on the pay scale unless you are in the Lead Teacher position, Director, Coordinator, etc.

Remember too there are other jobs besides just a daycare. You can also work as a Nanny. They usually pay well. There are Summer Programs, YMCA, Afterschool programs, family daycares, etc.

  5. That's a complicated question because it will depend on where you are. In NY your 2 year degree in EC would qualify you to be a lead teacher in a day care center classrrom and make between $12 and $15 an hour. Assistants need a high school diploma and make somewhat less. It may be very different where your new school is located. Your best bet is to call centers where you will be located or check and see if there is a Child Care Resource and Referral Agency in the area. You can get that informatio at:naccrra.org
