I currently work a full time job (37 hours a week) and earn a good wage and pay tax. However I am thinking of taking a 2nd part time job, would this be beneficial due to what tax would I pay and is there an amount you can earn before paying additional tax?

  1. you will end up losing 33% of the wage from your 2nd job. any tax allowances would have been used on your primary employment, so 22%  tax and 11% NI contributions. Quite a big hit but 67% of something is better than 100% of nothing....if you want more cash then what the heck, just take the extra job.

  2. Gary Sue is not quite correct. The basic rate of tax is 20%. For NIC, your first £105pw on your second job will be exempt and you will pay 11% on the rest.
