  1. My apologies Ohnois - It would have been helpful if you had made mention of those facts when posting your question. I will revise part of my answer.

Does your partner have a certificate from an accredited school? Being an accredited Nanny makes a HUGE difference when looking at wages.  I take she is not a Canadian citizen (New Zealand resident?) therefore you will need to find an employer willing to hire her so she can get a work visa to enable her to work here in Canada.  This can sometimes be a long, frustrating process unfortunately.

Pacific Live-in Caregivers is an agency which places nannies throughout Vancouver Island.

Every position will also require a police check in order to work with children - some also require a Social Services check. If you are not a Canadian citizen it is sometimes very difficult to obtain these clearances though being from New Zealand may be a bit easier but still time consuming.

If you go privately you can expect approx. $8.00 per hour for a 40 hour week but you will still need a work visa. Living on that wage can be very difficult especially on Vancouver Island (expensive) though many positions offer subsidies for living expenses or included room and board..  The job will include according to ads looking for private childcare.

Preparing and serving nutritious meals, Washing, ironing and pressing clothing and household linens, Performing light housekeeping and cleaning duties, Maintaining a safe and healthy environment in the home

Finding a position as a Nanny privately can be very difficult as families these days are very leery about who they entrust to look after their children. They prefer going to an agency because the nannies will be prescreened. Agencies also protect the interest of their employees - it's a two way street.

Hopefully this answers your question - immigrating takes a lot of planning and research but you're headed in the right direction. While Vancouver Island is beautiful and the weather some of the best it is expensive to live there. I assume you would be immigrating also - you should know that the Vancouver Island has very few jobs overall. You may want to check them out at  www.hrdc.ca just to give you an idea of what is available and where on the Island.

    Good Luck.
