  1. Look for a higher quality used saddle, you can usually find older Crosbys that last an eternity on Ebay for like 300 dollars. Ditto for older stubbens.

I just saw brand new Harry Dabbs(The maker of Jaguar saddles) that were older style(no knee rolls, flatter) that were very nice and going marked down from 1200 to 350 on a sale simply because they're out of fashion.

  2. Anywhere from $150 - $2,000. You can buy used saddles cheaper, though. Here's a good starter set: http://www.horse.com/English-Tack/Englis... and here's a website to determine your seat size: http://www.evideofiles.com/calculators2/... Good luck!

  3. If your looking for a good starting english saddle thats affordable, you might want to try a wintec saddle.

    Just google 'wintec'=]

  4. I would go for a wintec saddle. Get an all purpose saddle you can use it for anything. and for chaps, it depends on if y ou get leather or suede. You can get them for anywhere from $23-150 meaning 23 is closer to the suede and 150 is closer to the leather. Try these websites:

    http://www.doversaddlery.com

    http://www.123tack.com

    http://www.statelinetack.com

    http://www.horse.com

    Good Luck! Hope I helped!

  5. Wintec is the best synthetic. If your looking for leather. Collegiate are really soft and have a broken in feel too them. The leather from them is somewhat cheaper, because Miller makes them. But if you take proper care of it, it can last 15-20 years. Basically and saddle put together in England/uk, are usually better quality. Argentine leather is BAD. HDR is another good brand that is english leather put together in Argentine so its a bit cheaper but still nice, with really soft leather.

  6. Ditto to the wintec.  Find a used one on ebay.  I would recommend and all-purpose.  Get the one with Cair panels.  I had one as my starter saddle.  The barn where I ride uses them on all the lesson horses.

    here is a 17 1/2 used http://cgi.ebay.com/WINTEC-500-All-Purpo...

Here is a new w/ stirrups, girth, entire gullet system to custom fit your horse:

    Brown http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Wintec-500-All-P...

    Black http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Wintec-500-All-P...

FYI: English saddles measure larger/different from Western.  For instance, 17" is the average size for an english saddle.

Another note:  If the new packages is too much and you don't like the brown 17 1/2 (may be too big), check back on ebay regularly.  There are used wintec packages listed everyday.  For the cheapest option, wintec 500 w/cair.  one tier up, wintec 2000 (all recent editions come with cair).

Cair is an air panel/bladder system.  Awesome for the horse's back!  I bought my 2nd saddle (wintec) used on ebay for $219!  It was in excellent/slightly used condition.

As far as chaps go, you can check ebay again.  Also, stateline tack is having a huge sale right now on chaps (www.statelinetack.com).  A lot of people choose to ride in breechs, jods or lace-up boots w/ half chaps.  I rode like that for a while.  Now that I am "old" (25) and ride more, I use breeches and tall boots.  However, I do know some people who prefer/use chaps to train.

  7. It depends, everyone is different.

  8. If you live in Australia go to a shop called Horseland and if you get there catalouge there is an all round saddle that costs 299.95 dollars and it looks comfortable and cheap. then chaps would usually cost from 100-29 dollars which you can get in horseland too.

    Hope it Helps
