OK, so I played the violin in grade school. I'm much, much older now, but my interest in resuming playing has been revived (better late than never). Could anyone tell me not only what I should look for in a good quality violin, but also what brands are the better ones, and a price range. I'm in my 30's now, but am interested in learning more for recreation, not necessarily to perform, however I am very serious about resuming my studies. Please if anyone has any information to share or experiences, please let me know. Thanks!

  1. Bethanyfs answer was actually mine. we share a computer and i forgot to sign out of hers before i answered, sorry.

  2. probably around 200-300$ for an good one, depending on the maker and retailer. if your relatively new then you should get a used or a rental one just in case you have any problems.

I play a viola and they are the same shape and size except for the sound.

  3. You should plan on spending at least $200.  Don't go to ebay or a pawn shop;  it will cost more to get the instrument in playing order than you will pay for it initially.  Get a good student instrument from a respected source.
