I've been wondering how much would a return train ticket cost to go to Rotherham.

It'll be in about a month's time

I'd probably want to get there for about 11am - 12 noon

I'd want to be back in Newcastle for about 6pm - 7pm

I need help with this...

  1. For a same day return the cheapest way* is actually to buy THREE tickets:

Newcastle to York Cheap Day Return - £22.00

York to Doncaster Cheap Day Return - £10.70

Doncaster to Rotherham Cheap Day Return - £3.60

    Total cost: £36.30

If you're travelling on a weekday your best options may be:

leave Newcastle 09:30 arrive Rotherham 11:26 (change at Doncaster)

leave Rotherham 16:10 arrive Newcastle 18:45 (change at Doncaster)

*OK, if you buy your tickets RIGHT NOW, and don't mind restricting yourself to a particular seat on a particular train on a particular date of travel, you may be able to save three quid or so on the ticket price quoted above by buying a pair of Advance tickets.

However with the Advance type of ticket, if you miss your train, it's hard cheese, whereas the £36.30 combination gives you total flexibility and can be bought from Newcastle station ticket office on the day of travel.

  2. about £40
