i got a brickie. he layed 36m2 of block and 1.4m2 of engineering brick plus 6 lintels. lintels ranged in size from 0.5m to 2.4m.

Does anyone know how much i should have paid - even roughly. i even supplied (and paid) a labourer to help him and we laid out all the bricks to minimise his efforts.

he done the whole job in less than 20 hours.

  1. You can pay them £300-400 per 1000 bricks laid.

    Or £100-120 per day.

  2. I would have calculated approx £550.00 for the materials used. The fact that he may have completed only in 20hrs is to his advantage. Someone else may have taken 40hrs to complete the same tasks. A price should have been agreed in the first instance. I find it harder to work having others rather than experienced labourers helping. Daywork rates should be between £180.00 to £200.00 per day for a Bonifide craftsman.

  3. so it took him 3 days work, they usally charge between 100-150 per day

  4. They usually reckon building trade workers want 150 pounds per day (in UK Midlands), and if they class themseves as a mastercraftsmen they want more. Thank heavens I have sold my house and am now living abroad.

About 4 years ago I paid more than 24 pounds  per hour for an electrician - they usually want a bit more than brickies.

Hope this gives you some sort of guidance as there are many rip-off merchants in the building trade.

  5. just read your answers ....most are about right ..i should know ..been a builder for over forty years

  6. Hi yes my son is a brick layer there charged £1 a brick, but as he has fitted lintels, he would have given you a price for the job my son would have charged about £500.
