  1. You can pay less if you book in Chaing Mai.  They have travel agents a tour operators everywhere.  And once you've been on a elephant for 5 minutes that experience is fulfilled.  Its really no fun unless your stomping something. However that being said:

    1000 baht  $33 per person 1 day

Pickup from your hotel in Chiang Mai 8:30am

    See elephant show

    Elephant Riding

    Ox-Carting

    Lunch

    Bamboo rafting

    Orchid farm

Return to your hotel in Chiang Mai 5:00pm

  2. I do not have the cost for Chiang Mai, but paid very little just outside bangkok. I think the previous poster is 100% correct; it is a very nice experience, but pretty uncomfortable and not something you want to do for hours. I have been on elephants in South Africa and Thailand. Make sure it is included as part of a tour for something else and not the only and main activity of your day.

  3. Not sure exact prices, but  I would say 300 - 450 baht for a couple hours.

If you have not ridden on elephants before, they have short prickly hairs, they are not comfortable, and the tour operator will likely take you into a river and laugh as the elephant soaks you.

Seriously, you really don't want to be on an elephant for more than a couple hours, it stresses both you and the animal if you are on longer than that, and you should be able to do it for no more than 450 baht per person.

Do not be shy about haggling the price.  I went in 2007, and the price we were quoted in Pai (couple hours north of CM) was 700 baht per person for 2 hours, and we ended up paying 400 baht each.
