  1. An exchange usually means your institution is exchanging you with another student at the other institution. So...

If you're doing an exchange with your current home institution, typically it would be free, other than the implicit costs.

  2. I'm not completely sure about an exchange program, but I'm starting the process to study in London with University of Westminster through my school here in the states.  I will have to pay semester tuition ($13,400), the program fees ($4,800) and other expenses such as food, flight, and other things (about $5,000).  It's expensive but it all depends on the school that you start from and where you are going.  I know that my home school's scholarships transfer over, so you might want to look into that and talk to your financial aid office, as well as someone in the study abroad office.

  3. And exchange program wouldn't cost as much as flat out studying abroad.

I did an exchange program to Germany and lived with a family, so housing and food (besides what I did alone) was free. I only had to pay for travel and whatever else I wanted to buy.

I am currently studying abroad in Poland and it's sooo much more expensive. I have to pay the program $10,000, plus I have to pay for food and travel and whatever extra expenses I have. Fortunately, Poland isn't as expensive as England or Euro countries, but since the dollar is falling, it's harder. My flight cost around $2,000. Not too sure. Haha, my mom dealt with that. If you save your money you should be fine. I'd suggest getting a job so you can support yourself as well if you go over the 20K that your parents will pay.
