Question:

How much would car insurance cost me???

Before I start calling for quotes, I would like to know approximately how much I’m looking at to get car insurance in my name alone for 1 year. I need to know how much to put aside for it. I’m female, 31 years old, I live in Queens, NY, will be buying a used car from a private seller, have NEVER had car insurance in my name, and I’ve had my license for about 10 years.

Also, why is it that when you request a quote online, they only give you an estimate for a 6-month policy? Does that mean you only pay insurance for 6 months or do you have to pay the 6-month premium 2x in that year?

Thanks.

  1. enter the car info and zip and get a free online quote here...

  2. First off, you will need to call for quotes. Even if you are about 4-5 months away from buying a car and insuring it, it is the best way to give you an idea of insurance. Use the year make and model of the car that you are looking at now. Then, call when you are closer to buying a car, and ask them for an updated quote.

Every company is different, but most have 6 month or 1 year auto policies. At the end of that time, they "renew" your policy, which means that they give you the rate that is valid for the next 6 months or year. This may change from what you paid prior due to tickets, accidents, vehicle changes, or a company rate increase. Sometimes (rarely) it will stay the same for the next six months.

Ask when you get the quote if any of the discounts quoted are a one time credit. This will let you know if the rates will go up on renewal.
