  1. The current thinking is that anaerobic exercise like weight training as opposed to aerobic exercise like cycling is better for burning fats as high intensity aerobic exercise like cycling will tend to burn sugars and carbohydrates. It depends on your metabolism but to lose weight I think you have to combine cycling with a bit of weight training as well as ensuring that you eat a low fat diet.  Hoping to lose 5 to ten 10 pounds of body fat in a month is probably being too optimistic.

  2. There is no answer to that question.  There are only suggestions, routines, and progression models that will help you lose weight and tone your body.  First, to lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you take in.

While biking, an easy way to establish this is to bike until you feel as if you can't go much further.  Then bike another 1/2 mile to a mile.  This will ensure that you are burning away excess calories usually in the form of fats.

The next important aspect of losing weight and exercising is to have a routine.  Not only will a routine keep you focused and motivated to get up and exercise, your body will actually start to change to accomodate this routine.  In other words, by having a routine, your body will be adjusted to lose excess body fat.

The most important aspect of losing weight and toning muscles is to progress.  If you are trying to build muscle, you need to progress through every workout.  If you are trying to tone your body, you should be trying to progress every week or two.  You don't have to do this, but it makes the process much quicker.  By progression, you have three choices when it comes to biking.

    1.  Do the exercise the same distance, but quicker.

    2.  Do the exercise in the same amount of time, but ride further.

    3.  Do the exercise in the same amount of time, same distance, but choose a more difficult route.

Mentally, the easier of those three would be riding further or riding quicker.  But if you really want a good workout, ride more hills.

  3. Losing 1-2 lbs a week is the recommended rate. So if you maintain your current eating habits you will need to bike enough to burn 500 to 1000 calories a day. Use a couple of estimators of calories burned by cycling, they all give slightly different numbers. Then you can estimate if your in that range.

For the first month you may not lose any weight since you will build some muscle mass while burning the fat. The big trick is to not increase the eating. If you bike hard for 1 hr each day you can lose that kind of weight. If you don't bike as hard you will need to bike longer to get the same calories burned.

I have added some calorie burning estimators below.

  4. if you want to lose 5 pounds every morning, your going to have to do a lot more than ride bikes. you will probably have to amputate something.

  5. Cycle until you get tired, you have to push yourself.

Drink water not pop or anything with sugar in it, no fast food, stay away from processed foods.  Eat apples and bananas and other fruits.

Walk away from the table a little hungry.

  6. Cycling is not known to produce rapid weight loss. However, if you ride strenuously, it's an excellent aerobic activity. A couple of hours of hard riding will raise your base metabolism rate and appetite for several days.

If you keep your food intake the same or lower, you'll start losing weight.

However, if you give in to the increased appetite, then cycling won't help much with the weight loss.

  7. 15 miles a day at fairly brisk pace should see you lose 5lb a week.  One thing to remember is that as you do more exercise you'll feel more hungry so watch what you eat.

  8. It isnt how far its how fast. When im training properly i do shorter ut faster rides. This does help weight loss. WHen i say fast though im talking about having an avergae speed of about 21mph.

  9. Dude,

It's physics -- themodynamics.  To lose weight you have to burn more than you consume.  If you start riding 100 miles a day and increase your caloric intake by more than the extra amount the riding burns you will gain weight, not lose it.

To lose weight you must burn more than you consume.  Simple as that.  While I highly recommend bicycle riding, you don't need to ride at all if you cut down on your intake.  Simple formula: burn more and/or consume less.

Here's the fool-proof weight loss exercise: push back.  Push back from that table that it.  I promise you it works.
