Hi, I am looking for someone to do my marketing for me - a brand new small scale campaign that will probably include website management, advertising, flyers, door to door sales to companies?! i know somebody local that will do it - i was thinking £10 an hour is this reasonable to offer?! - Also, what should i expect someone to do for the money - to offer to help me get the business up and running?!

  1. You have to decide if you want an Employee (some-one who will do what you ask then to do, for wages**) or a Business Partner (some-one who will receive a share of the profits and thus work more on their own initiative).

**or a Salesman, who will work on commission ..

  2. Yes £5-10 is reasonbale wage.

Well if they are gonna do the marketing job for you this will involve advertising on free sites like http://www.sellit-right.com or if its a product they may have to spend money at http://www.amazon.co.uk or even ebay--and they may have to create a blog to TALK about your Biz. Also joining forums etc. Its alot. So £5-10 is good for them.

Think about whether theyd work in their own time OR do you request that they work in the hours you set.

  3. you get what you pay for!

there's a big difference in 'someone to help run your business' to 'marketing' to 'selling' to 'website development'

If you pay £5ph expect a 16-18yrs old with no experience, if you pay £30 per hour, expect a professional with a qualification and 5 years experience.

  4. £10 an hour won't buy you the calibre of person you need, unless you're going to prepare everything for them - copy, graphics etc.

Marketing is not something to leave to chance.  Your website, brochures, advertisements are prospective customers' first impression of your business.  You want them to pay attention to you for the right reason, not because you've produced something that doesn't work.

Contact your local Business Link for lots of free help and advice on your marketing.  They've guidance on direct mail, effective websites, basic marketing and run free or small fee courses on all of these.  They can also advise on where to go for more help with putting it all into practice.

Whatever you do, make sure you track the return on every penny you spend on marketing.  If you're not getting a minimum of £7 back for every £1 you spend on marketing, you're wasting your marketing budget.

    Good luck!
