How much would insurance in Germany be for a new driver from the us?

I may be moving to Germany for college.

I am 18, about to get my license, should I wait until I am in Germany to get it? Does it matter, or are insurance and car prices so high that I'm better off without it? I also heard that gas is $6 a gallon there.

I know that things are closer together and fewer people drive, but I'd love the convenience of having a car.

Well i have a brand new 2008 car and I an a 21 year old american living in germany.  For full covereage I pay 150 bucks a month through USAA
