Question:

How much would it cost for me to forgo an apartment search, and just buy a boat to live on in Boston, MA?

I've been in an apartment search for about 3 months. It's ridiculous; I've found nothing. I've always wanted to live on a boat, but I worry that Boston isn't the place. So the question is two fold: How much do you think it would cost per year ( the cost of the boat) to live aboard a sailboat starting in September? And: Is it possible for someone to live on a boat through one of New England's winters? Thanks all!

  1. You probably already have an idea of the cost of the boat.

Call around for mooring cost. In Boston Harbor itself they are very expensive. If I had to guess, I'd say over $1000 per month, and perhaps years of wait for a spot.

for a 40' boat, docking fee is $7000 for summer only.

Winter nights are typically in the 20F to 40F region, occasionally down to 0F.  Sailboats, except for the large ones, don't have much insulation.

  2. Pete, I don't think that this is a practical solution, as Boston's harbor waters often freeze, and  boats are not wintered in the water there. I am not from that area, but it does get cold there, and snows a lot. I also doubt that you could stay warm on a sailboat.

Even if you could, the slip costs could be determined by calling some on the phone and asking the costs. Just check the yellow pages for the place closest to where you want to be located.
