  1. Rent one or buy one used and give it to a charity, or a lucky kid  before you return.  It may be cheaper and you don't have to worry about your bike getting damaged or lost.

  2. Well, you'll have to invest in a pedal wrench, $25 at REI, but that's a one time cost.  Also, you'll need to deflate the tires for flying, so if you don't already have one you'll need an air pump to take with you.  You can pick up a box for free from any bike store.

Then it just depends on airline policy.  If you can keep the size under 62" (L+W+H) it's usually just treated as a bag.  If it's bigger, it can get pricey - American charges $100, United is $125, and Lufthansa $200.

  3. At the shop I work for, it costs $40 to box up the bike and $30 to put it back together again. If you know how to work on your own bike, then you could just get a box and do it yourself, but if you want it done professionally, you need to box it and then build it in Germany...and then box it and build it when you get back home. On top of that, you either need to mail it there or take it on the plane and I don't know how much that would cost.

You may want to look into just renting a bike while you're there since the trip is relatively short.

  4. You'll need to check with the airline you're flying. Bikes usta fly free, but no anymore, man.
