Ok, New York is 795 miles away from me. I drive a 2008 Nissan Sentra that gets 28 mpg on average, and gas costs ABOUT $3.15.

I tried doing this on a calculator but I got 90 dollars, which isn't right...

So, how much would it cost to go 795 miles, in a car that gets 28 miles per gallon, and gas costs 3.15?

Thanks!!

Im comparing the price of a flight, to the price it would cost to drive. The flight costs about 500 for 2 people, so I want to see how much it would cost to drive there.

Thanks to anyone who can give me the correct answer!

  1. You were pretty dead on with $90.

    795 miles, your car gets 28mpg, so 795 / 28 = 28.4 gal.

So you will need 28.4 Gallons of Gas to make a 795 mile trip.

    28.4 Gal x $3.15/gal = $89.46.

But remember, that $89.46 is just the cost of gas.  Don't forget about tolls.  (And snacks!)  And that is 1 way.  You would have to add another $89.46 + tolls for the trip back.

Don't know where you are coming from, but if it is south and You take Route 95 North, you will have a bit of cost for tolls.  (Near Baltimore the Ft. McHenry or Harbor Tunnels are $2 each, further up Rt95 there is a bridge toll of $5, The DE Turnpike is $2, The Delaware Memorial Bridge is $3, and the whole length of the Jersey Turnpike is tolled (maybe $10), plus a bridge (e.g. George Washington or Verizanno) or tunnel (e.g. Lincoln or Holland) into NY runs $4-$9.)

  2. $90 sounds right. 795/28=28.4, 28.4x3.15=89.46
