I'm still young, so I want to start saving for a sailboat, I want a nice custom built one. But I don't want to wait till I retire to get it, I'd rather not phone up manufacturers since I'm not going to be purchasing any time soon.

So how much would it be expected to cost?

  1. the unfortunate reality today is, for a top end  boat like an Alden or Little Harbor or Swan, the price is somewhere around 10,000 a foot, or $450,000 for a 45 footer new.

Now included in that new price is a lot of advertising and yacht broker fees; an older version of one of these boats can be had for 250-300,000.

Now there are plenty of really good sea worthy older 'glass boats out there; a little hunting around when the time comes and you can find a 40 footer for maybe 40-75,000.

Or what you can do what I did in my 20's...buy a beat old boat for cheap, fix it up sell it buy a slightly less beat boat fix it up sell it........until you get the boat you want and a whole load of experience and skills along the way.

So start saving your nickels and dimes, sail on a wide variety of boats every chance you get, read Sailing and Sail and Cruising World magazines and don't stop dreaming!!!!
