  1. Get your credit card out!!

Use the trainline.com and buy 2 singles in advance. Paying on the day would be a frightening experience

  2. lots of bobs!

  3. Look up http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ and play around with the journey query settings.

I'm assuming you mean Northfield station  in Birmingham, rather than Northfields station on the London Underground. The longer in advance you book your ticket, and if you avoid the rush hours, then the cheaper the ticket will be. Checking out travel next Monday, 17th March, you can still (as I type this on Saturday morning) get tickets for the 1025 from Northfield, 1100 from New Street, arriving at Euston at 1233, and on the 1125 from Northfield, for £17.50 one way. Leaving Northfield at 0855, 0925, 0955, or 1055, the current cheapest available fare is £38.60 one way. Leaving earlier, at 0625, 0645, 0655, 0715, 0725, 0755, or 0825, you're in the morning peak period and the cheapest one-way fare is £61.50.

Coming back, the same sort of restrictions apply, on the 2010, 2040, and  2046 (last train from Euston) there are still tickets available for £11 one way, on the 1940 from Euston the cheapest fare is £17.50, while on the 2100 from Marylebone (last train on that route you can use to get to Northfield) the cheapest fare is £17.90.

  4. Why don't you look on the website below?

  5. It all depends when you propose to travel. There are many cheap deals offered, including buying two singles, but the availability depends on exactly when you propose to travel and how long you want to be in Birmingham. Travelling to Birmingham in the morning peak could be expensive. The time of the last train back will depend, presumably, on arriving in London in time to catch the last tube back to Northfields , There are two services to Birmingham, so look at those from Euston on http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/default.as...

and those from Marylebone on http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/

These will give you some idea of what deals are available

Finally you wll need to check:-http://www.tfl.gov.uk/

for the last train to Northfields. There is, in fact, a timetable of first and last trains on the Piccadilly Line at:-

    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/f...

  6. If you don't mind a slightly longer journey than the 90 minutes on the Virgin Pendolino service from  Birmingham New Street to London Euston, use Chiltern Railways from   Birmingham Snow Hill  to London Marylebone. They take 2 hours 15 minutes but have bargain fares from £4 single bookable via a mobile phone and an £18 return purchased at the time of travel, valid after 11am Monday to Saturday, anytime Sunday. Return within one month, but NOT during the evening rush hour, and if you have a railcard you get a further one third reduction.
