I need a second key and I went to a dealer. He said that key and programming will cost me $180. I have Nissan Sentra 2007 and the key has a chip.

If I buy my own key how much would the programming cost?

$100 or more?

I forgot to ask him :/

  1. A lot. Sometimes in the 200 dollar range. The key itself only costs about 30 dollars. Not too bad, but the expensive part is the programming. But, the good thing is, if its a newer than 2005, you may be able to program it yourself. If you have two keys already programmed, all you need is a blank key (with a chip in it, just not programmed). Insert the programmed key into the ignition, turn it on (not start) and wait about 5 seconds. Place the second already programmed key into the ignition, turn to on, then turn off. Place the third (non-programmed key) into the ignition, turn on, then start. WALA!

  2. Hello,

I work at a Nissan dealer and we charge $45.00 for the labor to program key .This involves hooking computer up to program chip in key. I have heard some dealers in our area charge up to 105.00 to do the same job.

It takes tech approximately 15-20 minutes to do the job. Unfortunately chip in key does not come programmed. It must be programmed after purchasing.

    Good Luck

  3. I could be mistaken with Nissans but my understanding is if you buy the key with the appropriate chip for your year make and model all you need to do is have it cut.  Ebay has a large variety for great prices.  I bought a spare for our Hyundai on ebay for 12 dollars had it cut for 2 and never had a problem with it.  If nothing else you can always email the seller for clarification.  Good luck to you.

  4.    That isn't gonna save you that much more money plus they may not even program it for you if you go that route.

If your really wanting to save money call a few locksmith shops and check around make sure you tell them you have an existing key and could bring the car to them. I would bet you could get it done in the 100.00-125.00.

180 is a lot of money if you consider all you have to do is copy the key and program it. I mean you do have to get a random pin there not as easy as some cars. but still there's not a lot of time in it.
