Depending of the time of year, New York to LA or NY to San Francisco will run between $300 to $500 just for the rail fare. If you want a bed, it's about $250-$500 a night for a roomete or about $500-$800 for a bedroom. The earlier you book, the lower your fare will probably be. Remember, you're going to be on the train for about a week. All together, you're looking at between $3,000 to $5,000. www.amtrak.com

Just the fare alone will run you $429. If you ride coach the food is extra. The Diner has excellent food but a bit pricey
