and is it possible to grow sod on a tarp that has four inches of dirt on it?

Depends on your soil prep, how much topsoil, compost, etc you work in.  Are you doing the work yourself or having it done?  I don't know the cost per square foot of sod for you area of the country.......it can be between 30 cents to 75 cents....so the sod alone will cost $75 to around $180 depending on where you live plus the cost of fertilizer and soil ammendments.  Having it done, double or triple the cost.

Call your sod retailer, either a local nursery or the sod farm.  If you are having it delivered, add the delivery charge and pallet charge.
