We are building a new home. We have not yet consulted a construction company. The house plan that we like has 1989 sqare feet heated. We decided to push all 4 exterior walls outward by 2 feet to create a little more space. I was curious as to how much the square feet would increase by doing so. The original plan is 64'-2" from side to side and 49'0" from front to back. The two extra feet will make the home 66'2" from side to side and 51'0" from front to back. We are just curious. Not sure if we will stick with this particular plan, but would like to know how much the square footage would increase due to pushing an exterior wall out by 2 or more feet.

  1. I'm glad women do not have this problem when they give birth....  "I need a little more room in me!"

    "Push!"  "Push!"

  2. Take 64.166 * 49  = 3144.134 sqft

    Then  66.166 * 51  = 3374.466 sqft

    The difference: 230.332 sqft

    Hope that helps,

  3. To calculate the square footage, you simply need to multiply the length times the width.  However, I'm guessing that you have a garage, a utility room, or a porch included in those measurements that is not heated because, with your original dimensions, the square footage should be around 3136 rather than 1989.

By subtracting 1989 from 3136, we come to garage (or other non heated area) of 1147.  Then calculate the new dimensions for a total square footage of 3366 and, if we subtract out the garage from that number, we come to 2219 for your new heated square footage (unless, of course, you are adjusting the dimensions of the garage as well).

  4. your old or original plan would have approx 62 by 49 sq ft or

    3038 sq ft (62*49)

your new plan would have 66 by 51 or 3366 sq ft.  Thats just over 300 sq ft but I dont know if that is all livable as you  had stated you only had 1989 sq ft so I am a little confused on this one.  Hope that helps anyway.
