  1. It depends on where you are located at the time.

    In New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador you would use the HST or Harmonized Sales tax rate, of 13%.  The rest of the country, except for Alberta, uses the separate taxes, which honestly, works out to be the same thing!

    Amount:     $40.00

    GST(5%)        2.00

    PST(8%)        3.20

    Total:          $45.20

    I'm not sure what the "14 cents every dollar" means...but the GST was recently reduced by a percentage point, so our rate of taxation is now 13%.

  2. ibetheboogins has the most correct answer: the tax depends in which province you are. But she forgot to mention, if you purchase a product online and you are outside of Canada, you wont pay any taxes.
