I am 17, just graduated, I will start University soon and take a 4-year bachelors course in German and French ( I already speak both fluently).

Do I need to take a degree in teaching? How long is it?

Will the fact that I'm Irish affect my career prospects and that I have a fake left arm?

  1. Depending on the state and district, you should start between 30,000 and 40,000.  It goes upward from there depending on time on the job and additional education

  2. If you want to become a teacher of any kind, you do in fact need a degree. and No, the fact that you're Irish has no bearing on the situation at all. as for the fake left arm, it depends on the school. Some bosses don't like handicapped people. Personally, I think it doesn't matter at all.

  3. You will be able to get a job much easier with a teaching degree in the field you want to teach in.  Some schools do hire people with a 4-year degree if they are more desperate.  The teaching degree is a bachelor degree (4 years), but you can get a Master's Degree in Education or a doctoral as well.  None of the schools I've encountered would care if you have a fake left arm - you don't need a "real" arm when teaching.  You DO need to know class management (keeping students controlled so they can learn without disruption)!

  4. You will need to get a degree in education.  Make sure you declare that when you go off to college.  It is four years also.  Not an additional four years, but the same four years.  Are you still in Ireland?  Being Irish has nothing to do with whether you are hired or not, and the fake left arm doesn't either.  I had a teacher that didn't have hands, just two hooks.  Most starting teachers get between thirty and fourty thousand a year, depending on where you are.

  5. Depends on the state and the school. Teachers average 30,000-40,000 US. In a few states it can be up to 50,000 (with a specialized masters degree) and rich private schools can pay more.

The arm is not a problem at all, the US has very good hiring practices, especially in the public realm and in education, but you may have to re-take some courses at a US university. I had a teacher in a wheelchair myself. You will need a degree in education - a BA which is 4 years. Can you take your degree (major) in education and minor in languages? The languages are great - very good skill to have, that will be a definite plus. The fact that you are Irish is not a problem either except in getting a green card. But it has been done. Teaching is a very stable profession and there are teachers unions that are very protective - pensions as well.

If you want to come to the US - come on over. We can always use another good teacher.
