I made this cake for my nephews 5th birthday, and someone at the party wanted me to make one for their child's party, I told them I would think of the price, but I dont know what to charge... If I had to buy all the ingredents to make it.. it would add up to about $17.00.. So I was thinking maybe $40 total?? Would anybody pay that price for it?? If not, please tell me what you would...

this 1st pic is before I set the cake up without the hose overflow..

  1. people pay alot of money for a nice looking birthday cake. id prob pay nothing over 40 dollars. it is a really cute cake. ask the parents what they see as a fair price. suggest $40 and if its too high than be willing to accept 30. goodluck cakemaker!

  2. very cute! i think that, that is a pretty fair price! =)

  3. Hello Lyla:

This is a great cake.  To get a price for a cake of this kind, you should call three bakeries and ask how much they would charge for a cake this size and get an idea of the market rate for such a cake, then price yours accordingly by averaging the3 estimates.

This is a very detailed cake, and labor intensive. Depending on where you live and what other bakers charge for this themed cake, you're probably right on with your $40 estimate. Maybe even slightly more because of the time it takes to finish it.

You're very talented and patient!  Good luck.

  4. i would pay about 35-40.

    sounds good to me.

  5. Very cute cake. You are talented. I guess the price would depend on where you"re from. Where I'm from, no we wouldn't pay that for a cake, even though with all the effort you put into it, it would be worth it. I think the max I would pay would be $30.

  6. Wow that is a tough one It cost 17 bucks? is that a scratch cake???

did you use every single thing that you bought?? I used to be a cake decorator, professional and that is not a $40 dollar cake I do not want to hurt your feelings and I mean no ill will or harm.   But by all means if someone is willing to pay 40 for it I say ask that amount for it.

truthfully if you have 17  in supplies then you double the amount.

From the photos I would say that cake could be made with 3-4 box cake mixes and about 10 cups of frosting.  did you make or buy frosting(s)  perhaps you could scale it down if they need a cheaper price.

  7. Lyla, I think that you are a little off on the $17. I would not count food color as an expense as you only use a little of it. Icing is $2 for 2# of it, and flour is still less than $3 for 5#. I think that $20 would be a fair price for it.

    Regards,

    Dan

  8. very cool if they do accept 40 then i would work on the icing look up tips on how to apply it smoother

    ive got some

1.) let the cake cool completely

2.) before icing apply a thin layer of icing its supposed to be see through

then apply the normal amount of icing

3.) dip your butter knife or special tool into warm water shake the exces water and then go back and lightly smooth out the final layer of the icing

oh and you can also consider the cuts you make to shape the cake

  9. Well, as long as you and the other person agree on the price, then its ok.

  10. thats sooooo cute!!! 40 is a good price.

  11. Totally depends on where you live. In an expensive town near me people think nothing of paying $75 for a kid's cake. In a normal middle class neighborhood, $40 sounds right.

  12. that sounds fair to me. you obviously put a lot of time and effort into that. Are the cupcakes included in the price ? I'd pay that much.
