Just wondering how much you would pay for a homemade scarf at a rural craft show...?

The material cost is around $5.60 USDA. I don't want to set my prices too high...but they do take approx. 5 or more hours to make (using all of the yarn).

How much would you pay?

Also, what (general) region are you from?

  1. I make and sell knitted scarfs, mitts, hats etc, a scarf generally goes for $15 CDN.  The people who try to sell for $20 are left at the end of the craft sale without a thing sold.

    Scarfs -$15

    Mitts, Adult - $10; Kids - $7

    Toques - $7

    Full Set -$20 - 30

Baby sweaters with hat - $20; Toddler - $25 (I don't make bigger than that because I prefer to make more smaller items than spend too much time on one)

Dog sweaters - $15 - 40 (depends on size, and style, I make from chihuahua to boxer sizes

    Socks, kids - $8; adults $15

    Baby Afghans - $40

    I live in Quebec, Canada

I don't make a living off it, but at least it sells.

  2. zip. $0.

I've got a lot of crafty friends who would not be able to give me a christmas gift if I actually purchased one from someone else.

Maybe that's just cuz I live in the Seattle area, but I'd say 30% of all scarfs I see around my region are gifts from friends and relatives that made the scarfs themselves. So I don't need any scarfs I get them for free. My gf was given 2 last year.

  3. I'm in Texas, and as a general rule, I won't pay more than twice for a hand-made item than I would for a store-bought item (and that's a lot more than most people!).

So if I know I can buy a scarf I like at the Gap for $15, I won't pay more than $30 for a comparable one that's hand-made.  It would have to be genuinely unique.  I'm a seamstress and I sell my sewing work.  Knitting I do for myself and gifts.  It takes me 15 hours to knit a pair of socks - you can't really put a reasonable price on that.
