I am a certified math teacher at a NJ High School and have been teaching for 3 years. I also have a tutoring certification which I gained through a program in collage. I have just moved to Newtown, Pa and have been asked by a mother who homeschools her son to tutor. How much do I charge? What do people pay or charge for math tutoring like this?

  1. The general pay for a teacher is in the realm of $25 an hour, you must take travel time into account if it's a great distance.

  2. It depends on the going rate in your area, you can check around.

It depends also on your willingness to work on a sliding scale for parents who may not be able to afford as much.

Hourly rates for one on one tutoring are always a bit higher than tutoring 3 to 5 students at one time.

The average here is $10.00 to $12.00 for each instructional hour (50 minutes), for multiple students, and $25.00 for private lessons.

  3. You need to find out about the going rate in your area because it can be different in different places. Pull out your Yellow Pages and find something on tutoring or educational services. Then start making calls, asking them how much they charge, what the qualifications are, etc. Propose a fee that seems reasonable to the mother but be willing to negotiate. The fee could also be dependent on how often you see the son--the more often, the less per hour you could charge.
