I would ask the mother to give suggestions as to what she needs, if  the baby is here already, it will be easier since you know the gender.  But honestly, its not about the amount of money you spend but rather how deeply you thought about the gift.  It could be a keepsake, an heirloom or just something incredibly practical.  Whatever amount spent it must be within your personal budget.  It makes no sense to break the bank and go through a hard time for a gift.

  3. When my sister and sister in law gave birth I spent the same amount.  I went to a local departmentstore and bought everything on sale, so even though I only paid 45 on the gifts.

  4. I hate gift buying so I always do gift cards.  I don't do gifts for people I do not like so it would most likely be for about $100.
