Before I get a hamster I want to know if I will be able to sleep at night with a hamster in the room, and yes he has to sleep in my room. So i can't move him into another room. I will get a soundless runnin gwheel and on the wheel's online reviews the people says it really works and makes no sounds!

  1. In the past most of my hamsters have been very noisy at night.  It does help to have a soundless wheel but if you get a hammie like mine they will put food in their wheel and than run so you get a nice rattling noise.   Only one of my hamsters has done that though.  I currently have an older hamster who is actually very quiet at night.  If you get a younger one though most likely it will be pretty loud.  Make sure you have toys for ur buddy to play with  and treats to knaw on otherwise the hamster will chew on bars dig and make other noises.  As long as you are not a light sleeper and can deal with some noise than you should be fine.  Good luck if you do get a hamster!

  2. The noiseless (solid) wheels are pretty good. They dont squeak, I've had no problems with mine...

Except... that sometimes the bearing where its attached to the cage gets alittle loose and it will knock a bit. But its aregular sound and shouldnt bother you too much. And of course you could always get up and retwist the attachment.

If its a wheel in a tank, then dont worry at all.

But yes, hamsters are nocturnal, so you will hear their normal activities at night... drinking water, eating, burrowing, playing, etc...

I'm a bit of a night owl though, so it never bothered me much.

  3. If you can sleep with a constant sound than no need to worry, but yes hamsters are noctournal, and very noisy at night. Good luck! Hope you like your hamster!

  4. the silent running wheel really DOES work can barely hear them when there runnning just make sure nothing is on top of the wheel or else the wheel will bump into it and make noise

  5. VERY - if you have a squeaky hamster wheel - uggh!

  6. I got a hamster for my 2 year old son. He sleeps through anything! But for some reason the constant sound of the hamster on his wheel kept him up. We have the quiet wheel too... I don't think I would get a hamster if it had to stay in your room!

  7. Yup they will chew does bars all night very annoying.

  8. Hamsters are extremely noisy at night.  The are nocturnal so they sleep all day and they are up all night.  Part of the noise they make is the hamster wheel so a soundless one would be better but you may still hear it.  Also my hamster bangs her water bottle around.  So there is quite a bit of noise.  Maybe you should get ear plugs for your ears so that you don't hear it or maybe there is somewhere in the house where you could keep your hamster at night while you are sleeping.

  9. they are wildly noisy. you might want to put it in a different room. if you can get to sleep before the hamster starts going wild, you probably wont wake up. if you're a heavy sleeper

  10. hamsters are so noise if you dont put a blanket over the cage'

  11. the thing isn't the wheel--a lot of times hamsters will burrow into the newspaper at the bottom of the cage and nibble things and squeak. U might get lucky and get a quiet one, but most likely it'll make some noise. If you aren't a super light sleeper though, I think you'll be fine.

  12. The soundless wheels are sort of expensive, but are safer, because they have no slots, and are quiet.  If you're a deep sleeper and noises like a little bit of construction work wouldn't wake you, then don't worry about it, but if you're a light sleeper, maybe you should find a different pet or room for the hamster to go in.  If the hamster chews on the cage (only if it has wire bars) then that sort of sounds like construction work.  My Gerbil did that- it was sooo annoying and I'm a deep sleeper!  You could try using a fan or some sort of noisemaker to help, but sometimes Hamsters can get LOUD!!

  13. there not to bad if you are a heavy sleeper bu if you arent its a nightmare

  14. if you slept through the rat, you'll probably sleep right through the hamster.  Hamsters aren't verbal so you don't have to worry about squeaking or noises like that.  The soundless wheel should work just fine - though, be warned, sometimes my baby puts food on her wheel and runs too.  Some hams do, some hams don't.  I usually just get up, stagger over, take the food away and that's the end of that for the night.  A couple nights of my cold fingers digging around under her tummy on the wheel made my ham a bit more thoughtful about putting food on her wheel and rousing the momma.  As for the digging in the bedding (please, don't use newspaper), moving food around, crawling through tunnels, cracking seeds and eating them - if you slept through your rat doing it, you'll probably sleep through the hamster as well.  The only real problem would be if your ham started to chew on the bars of her cage - very loud, very annoying.  There's something you can buy to put on the bars that tastes bad that most pet stores sell however but the real easy way to prevent this is to simply take the ham out and let it run around and burn off its energy just before you go to bed.  Especially the younger ones have a lot of energy and the need to run - think of them as a kid stuck in the car on a long road trip.  Set aside a good chunck of time before you go to bed and play with your ham then.  Once its content, it'll be much more interested in doing 'housy' things in its cage than trying to burn off excess energy.  My ham sleeps in my room right next to my bed.  I have a ceiling fan for white noise and after the first week of getting used to her nightly rustlings, I sleep right through everything now.  In fact the really quiet whirr of her wheel actually relaxes me and helps put me to sleep these days.

If worse comes to worse, you should also realize you probably have a closet in your room.  Hams like dark cavey places.  As long as there is good air flow, its an option to move your ham into there during the night.  When my ham is roaming my room, she aways ends up wanting to play in the closet.  My carpeting in there will never be the same...
