I seems that everyone has a different answer on this. I may get many different answers here too. But, how often should I worm my horses? What has everyone found works for them? I have been told once every four months. But others say every two months. Also should I switch up brands? or active ingredients? Please Help

  1. It depends on a number of factors, as stated above, but age is another factor that you need to consider. An older horse needs worming more frequently as they're immune systems don't work as well as they do in a younger horse. I generally worm my horses about every 10 weeks. Hope that helps

  2. For my horses I de-worm everyother mounth. Swiching between the "big super doper" stuff and the regular. Just so the worms don't get used to it....In Howrse the game, It says 3 mounths, but I personaly don't think thats right...

  3. My horses are usually done every three months.  You should really switch active ingredients each time, not just to a different brand.  If you use a type of ivermectin one time, you should use a moxidectin or praziquantel the next time.  Eventually you will use another ivermectin and so on but this reduced resistance to the types of wormers.

  4. Every 6-8 weeks!

  5. every 3 months... that's what I do

  6. It all depends on where you live and how much your horse is grazed.  In general, people are supposed to deworm their horses every 2 months or quarterly.  Horses in places like Florida who are pasture kept need to be dewormed every six weeks or so.  You also need to change the brand of deowmer every single time you deworm you horse.  For example, in your routine switch from one brand to another and then back to the other brand.  You need to both tube worm your horse and paste worm them.

  7. When i used to have horses we de-wormed them every 6-8 weeks but i'm not sure about the brand

    hope i helped a bit!

  8. Depends what part of the country you live.  I live in Texas where it is hot and there are worms all year round so we worm our horses every 3 months.

  9. I use EQUEST which does most worms and I worm every 12 weeks

If your horse is particularly succeptible to worms then perhaps you should get a strongish wormer or worm more often?

It reallly depends on the horse.

  10. I worm my horses every other month.

You shouldn't use the same dewormer everytime, switch brands.

My Vet actually says to worm them every month, but I don't.

Remember, you can't over worm them.

  11. It's all changing anyway...your vet should be aware of the changes being outlined as the result of resistance developing to all of the current deworming agents.  All of us should be finding this information and changing the way we do it according to the new information.  In the meantime, every two months will do, but get advice from your vet on rotation.  Anything advised on here that is based on past information is no longer valid anyway.

  12. It should be every 6-8 weeks. We do every other month. We alternate a generic ivermectin wormer with a high-end ivermectin wormer such as Equimaxx or Zimectrin Gold. Some people like to use different types of wormers every time, but the program we follow has worked well for the last 15 years. We have never had any problems.
